Old St. Louis BBSes

I got my start on the Fourth Dimension in St. Louis (532-4652... I still remember it!), a Networks II BBS, in 1983. I miss it.

My ex-husband and I ran The Junk Drawer, a pretty popular TRS-80 BBS running the spectacular and under-utilized MTABBS software. When we moved to Oregon, we handed it off to our friend Marlin, and he ran it for years, until the hardware finally gave out.

By the time the IBM PC guys got into the game, BBSing just wasn't as interesting anymore.

obv/2 dead?! i think not!

hey all,

just joined this tribe and i noticed that the last post was in july of 2006.. so here goes..

i used to run a board in the 609 area code back in the day.. i was an obv/2 freak at heart.. i ran mostly an art based board and also started and created insanity net -- a FIDO based mesage board that was pushed from the east coast to the west coast..

anyways, i have been feeling some kind of way lately about the sharp decline in bbs's since the boom of the internet.. i still have a passion for DOS based ANSI/ascii art and i since this feeling has pretty much taken over me the past few years, i just wanted to announce that i will soon be releasing an obv/2 clone that is going to be completely rewritten for modern technology and the internet.. i started working on the code this week and i already have the base network code complete..

yes, telnetting to my own box and seeing some nice ANSI and ascii art still gives me a chill down my spine.. oooooo lord i can't wait until the initial release..

so, here is a new topic to keep everyone's interest peaked.. if you have any questions or if you'd like to donate some time/code to the project, let me know..

so again, be on the look out for obv/2 .NET to be released soon.. i am writing it in C# on the .NET 2.0 platform using visual studio 2005..

so if there are any C# developers out there who might be interested, drop me a line ;)

Hi Bob,

Just wanted to pass along the bad news that Paul Casey (sysop of Waka Waka
BBS in Seattle) passed away on 06-16-06.
The doctor says it was due to kidney failure, but both his sister Tina and
I think it was something else; and she had an autopsy performed. The
results of the autopsy results won't be known until at least 07-20-06.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made, but he is very likely going to
be cremated and his ashes spread in a city park - if regulations permit of
course.

There are quite a few BBSes still alive and kicking. Synchronet BBS (http://www.synchro.net) is a wonderful application that works as a 6-line telnet-able BBS with web, telnet and news interface. File areas are available via FTP, it's free, and it runs on most any Windows box.

While not really a game for the single-line BBS, this has been one of my favorites for ages. I recently found a telnet'able, free BBS with Mutants but someone fuxxor'd the game with ion force fields on every year between 2000 and 5000. So much for playing.

Any addresses for other bbs's that run it? Please? :D
Hey all.

I found the old source code (Pascal) for Forum-PC, and have copyright to the source code for Searchlight BBS. Would anyone be interested in a Unix/Linux/OSX port that answers via Telnet, or that can be used as an actual dial-in BBS? I've been twiddling with the idea for a few days, but don't feel like putting energy into it unless it's going to be used/useful.

We need to start porting some of the old BBS game classics to the web. I know that some of this was done in an ad-hoc fashion, but perhaps we could do a big emulator that would let the original binaries run?

Just a thought. I would love to login to tribe and be able to play space dynasty for example.

415/510/650 BBSs

I was on a lot of the BBSs in the 415/510/650 area codes. My first was probably BALC (Bay Area Love Connection). 16 line BBS running Deluxe with 2400 Baud modems. About as fast as was needed for a chat board.

Some of the other BBSs I used to be on were SFNet (of course), California Connection (or CalCon), Connections, Dating Tree. These were the multi line BBSs. There were also a few single line ones. DSP is the only one whose name I can recall now.

My favorite BBS was Virtual Pleasures or just VP. Still hear from some people I knew from VP. That was running MajorBBS by Galacticom.

For most of the BBS experience, I was using a Macintosh Plus and using Hayes SmartCom to connect.

If any of the aforemetioned BBS names rings a bell, lemme know. It was a fun time while it lasted.

You might have heard of Jason Scott, the self-made BBS historian who started www.Textfiles.com - an awesome web site, all in green monospace type.

He has created a documentary film called "BBS: The Documentary" in which he has interviewed many old school BBSers and programmers, from users, sysops and ANSI artists to folks like Ward Christensen (author of XModem).

I saw some excerpts from the film at DefCon this year. It's cool, really brings back memories and puts the BBSing scenes into perspective like an outsider would never have been able to do.

Check out previews and info, and maybe order a copy, at: www.bbsdocumentary.com

What was your favorite BBS software to run?

I was partial to Oblivion/2. Also really dug Celerity too :) Anyone else? I remember spending hours/days/weeks creating new menu sets, infoforms, matrix logins, and ansi welcome menus.. couldn't get enough of it :)

All the others (PC Board, Wildcat, etc.) were not near as cool as WWIV. It also had the best online door games.

I want all of the other "Palace BBS" users to post their thoughts on this.

I think most of us can agree that the old BBS days were a time to build reputations and often explorer the "darker side" of computers.
What BBS/handle/topic was most memorable to you and why?

Just curious if anyone remembered either of these programs/systems. I managed to get my BBS hooked up to Fidonet managing northern CA above SF with 125/80 (sad I can remember that :-) and had quite a few friends in those days throughout northern CA and a few across country (had a pirate phreaker board for awhile until I got "the call" and took it all down).

I remember my first call to The Dragon's Weyr in Livingston, NJ, back in '84. I had a C64 (the first of many, since I seemed to generate a field that made them self-destruct)and a 300baud modem. The boards I called were almost all DragonSoft and 2AM, and I met great people (met my husband that way, in fact!) We used to have an annual inter-BBS picnic, and pub runs for the legal adults to meet. I even ran a 2AM board myself for a while, but kids and house and Fidonet interfered eventually. Nice to see I'm not the only one reminiscing about the good old days!

I'm so glad that someone put together a tribe like this so that I don't have to (I'm a lazy BBSer) --- Good ... so now there's a place where people might know what a GTG is and where I'm not when I'm AFK. Why it's really funny when you say "Re" to someone, and when to and not to use +++

Good to be here.

I remember dialing into one or two line BBS systems run off my PCs stuck on a cabinet in my friend's houses... I remember bulletin boards, lousy threading, and on-line/off-line community... I remember thinking how cool fidonet was... how awesome it was that I could talk to someone in Germany via Outworld in Los Angeles (which was huge, it had 32 lines at the end).

Then I discovered Usenet. :)

But, somehow, I don't think anything has quite recreated the combination of geographic community, online and offline, that the BBS world fostered.
