i hear there's a number of linux based bbses out there now... i used to run a wwiv board years ago, and the idea of running a board again is pretty appealing..
i was wondering if anyone had any experiences with any particular *nix based bbs packages out there... good or bad.. =)

Re: linux based bbses...
Thu, December 4, 2003 - 10:39 PMDid some googling.. didn't find anything *exactly* linux-based but did find some good links..
www.cotbbs.org/links.htm
-- Has links to various types of software, bbs lists, etc..
uncnsrd.mt-kisco.ny.us/citadel/
-- And I think Citadel was ported to linux or some type of *nix.

Re: linux based bbses...
Mon, December 22, 2003 - 1:24 PMCitadel/UX isn't a port -- it was written from scratch and while it's better than nothing it's not really anything cool like Citadels I used to run.
If anyone here wants to see a Citadel that has been ported upwards to 32-bit and switched to TCP/IP, check out Slumberland as a starting point...

Re: linux based bbses...
Wed, December 10, 2003 - 5:18 PMI played with a few... I wasnt impressed. The doors were all pretty poor. None of the good ones have been ported, and there really isnt a great ansi editor for linux, atleast that I've found.
I'm a debain user, but I'm in the process of setting up a bbs for those who miss the door games, and its going to have to be wintel based....

Re: linux based bbses...
Tue, December 16, 2003 - 4:42 PMI have been running a BBS100-based BBS for about 6 years on the net. BBS100 is a rewrite of the DOC-style BBS's; if you were a member of the ISCABBS then the UI will be right at home to you. It's discussion-forum & messaging focussed; there's no facilities for games or downloads, but it's still pretty fun and there's a good crowd of people there.
telnet to:
bbs.hell.org
have fun!

Re: linux based bbses...
Wed, April 21, 2004 - 3:31 PMYou can probably run an old DOS board under DOSEMU. I think I have heard of some people running Wildcat or WWIV that way. Would certainly be worth a try.

Re: linux based bbses...
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 6:03 PMActually, there's a *very* good software being actively developed, with constant updates, at www.synchro.net. You'll want to have some linux experience to install and operate it. On the user side, if it's properly configured, the user would never notice the difference between Linux and DOS/Windows.
They also release a Windows version.
Some of the features that I personally love about it:
Internet services (WWW, FTP, IRC, POP/SMTP, and more)
Shell modules (Renegade clone, WWIV clone, etc)
Huge support base, including DOVE-Net echoes via ftp
Extremely easy and somewhat cool default setup, via a simple menu interface
If anyone wants to see what a somewhat default setup looks like, check out my BBS at
setxbbs.no-ip.org/.
Learn more at www.synchro.net/. Whether you're a Windows user or Linux user, it's well worth looking at if you're even thinking of setting one up.
