BBS: The Documentary

You might have heard of Jason Scott, the self-made BBS historian who started www.Textfiles.com - an awesome web site, all in green monospace type.

He has created a documentary film called "BBS: The Documentary" in which he has interviewed many old school BBSers and programmers, from users, sysops and ANSI artists to folks like Ward Christensen (author of XModem).

I saw some excerpts from the film at DefCon this year. It's cool, really brings back memories and puts the BBSing scenes into perspective like an outsider would never have been able to do.

Check out previews and info, and maybe order a copy, at: www.bbsdocumentary.com

I watched this documentary this past weekend, at least a good chunk of it (it's 3 dvd's!)

The guy who invented Fido-net was a twig! There were some real oddballs on there as well. Poor Wayne Bell lamenting about why he couldn't figure out why anybody would want to run his BBS. I loved the flame wars section, talking about the various computer users trashing each other over the brand of computer they were using. On mine, it was always us (PC) versus the Amiga users.

The one guy I just couldn't figure out on the documentary was that guy who loved the Apple Lisa, talking about his first online game experience. I'll leave that for you to find on your own!

We tried to find the Wayne Bell part, which disc/section was that on?

Also found it funny to note how many people had guitars or other musical instruments around in the rooms they were being filmed in.

If I'm not mistaken, it was in the Sysops section. I'll ask my friend, who the documentary belongs to.

I didn't get to see the part where they intervied the guy who wrote arc and how Phil Katz ripped him off with pkzip, but my buddy said the author of arc got all teary eyed about it, and recounted all the hate mail he was getting at the time.

You could feel the ARC guy's pain, especially when he's tearing up and then snaps to with "But I'm fine"... yeah whatever. That poor guy's screwed up for life. Or maybe just when he remembers his past. Can't blame him though.
